In-Building Solution (IBS)

80% of cell phone calls originate or terminate inside of a building. The Vanu IBS solution improves in-building coverage, decreases OPEX and reduces future macro network CAPEX expenditures by off loading the traffic from the macro network.

Conventional in-building coverage solutions such as repeaters or microcells do not achieve the capacity increases and cost savings of the Vanu IBS system. Microcells require significant expense in building wiring, cooling and power conditioning, while repeaters increase the load on the outdoor macro cell. Femto cells attempt to address this problem for 3G, but are limited in capacity and require a separate network interface and management system.

The Vanu IBS combines the best of each of these systems to improve coverage, increase overall network capacity, and reduced network CAPEX and OPEX. There is no new cabling required as the system utilizes Vanu's patented IP-backhaul technology and runs over conventional Ethernet networks. The system uses all standard GSM network interfaces and can be easily integrated into existing network and management systems. The IBS units are managed just like any other base station on the network, which streamlines performance issues such as handovers between the in-building and macro networks.

Although carriers globally are migrating to 3G, the majority of traffic is still handled by GSM networks. It is essential to decrease network expenses and spectrum utilization of the GSM networks to facilitate this transition. The Vanu IBS allows carriers to focus their macro CAPEX on future 3G expansion while improving coverage and reducing operating expenses of their existing GSM networks.
